FAQS > Heater Safety

While Houstonians rarely need to use their heating systems for more than a few months out of the year, a gas or electric heating system creates a cozy indoor environment when outside temperatures fall. Most consumers are surprised to find out that their heating system is usually integrated with their cooling system, exposing the heat exchanger to continuous cycles of cooling and heating throughout the year. As the metal expands and contracts and is exposed to moisture laden air, small cracks and areas of rust can develop.

This wear is perfectly normal, but requires monitoring. If left unchecked, cracks or holes in the heat exchanger can allow hot gas to enter the internal environment exposing occupants to carbon monoxide and other harmful gases. While electric heating systems do not pose the same threat, their safe operation is equally important. Nash Mechanical recommends annual heater checks to ensure the safe operation of your residential heating system. The small expense required to thoroughly inspect and test-run your heating system will help identify problem areas before they become dangerous. Schedule a heater checkup before the onset of winter requires you to call on your heating system.

The replacement heating systems Nash Mechanical endorses use a patented tubular heat exchanger designed to minimize the occurrence of dangerous cracks while offering superior longevity. Additionally, these systems include a number of "limits," fail-safe temperature sensors used to ensure that the system does not become dangerously hot and create a fire hazard.
